    1. Introduction.

T: Good morning, children, today we’ll speak about our environment. We must give the answer for the main question: “To die or not to die?” Environment means the land, water and air that animals and plants live in. It’s usually used when talking about the way people used or damage the natural world.

We live in a magic world. The world is full of wonderful things It’s our nature. Nature gives us life. Nature teaches us to be kind and clever, attentive and creative. Y. Gagarin said: “How beautiful our blue planet is! How small it is! People of the world, take care of it, protect it.” I want this poem to be the epigraph of our lesson.

    (Starting of the presentation showing)

                                 IT’S DIFFERENT WORLD TODAY

Different kinds of people telling me               Don’t look back, the world has got a                                                                         lot in store.

The snow is white,                                         Wait and see

In former days the grass was green,               people always want to have more, more, more.

The sun was really bright.                              With all the ups and downs along the way

You have to fight for freedom,                       It’s a different world,

    That’s OK.                                                      It’s a different world,

    It’s a different world,                                      It’s a different world today!

It’s a different world,                                      Now that I am a woman

It’s a different world today!                            I see the children grow

Nowadays they drive a car                              And deep inside I wish

At eighty miles an hour                                   I was so little, but I know

Years ago there wasn’t all that traffic.            You cannot turn back the pages, so they say

So much power.                                              It’s a different world,

There must be some improvement anyway    It’s a different world,

    It’s a different world,                                      It’s a different world today!

    It’s a different world,

It’s a different world today!                                      (Karen and Alice Maywood)

    2. Aim.

T: Once upon a time there lived MEN and NATURE. They lived on the EARTH in great harmony.

NATURE helped MEN to hunt, to fish, to grow food and to build many things. The time went on. Once MEN built many factories, plants, different cars and machines, electric power stations and many other things. All these things were very dangerous for NATURE because of their waste. That is why NATURE felt ill. Since that time the situation has been changing to the worst.

Now NATURE has different diseases. They all are called ECOLOGICAL  PROBLEMS.

Question: What ecological problems we have and how we can solve them? We must answer for it according our today’s lesson.

    3. Brainstorming.

T: We see letters. Name your associations with each letter on the topic: “Environment”.

R – rubbish, reduce, reuse, resource

    D – destroy

    S – species, survive, save

    P – pollute, protect, planet

    E – environment, endangered

    L – litter

Make up sentences with these words. Example: People must protect our planet.

    4. Discussion.

T: Let’s discuss the questions about changing environment and then you’ll give some interesting facts about these problems which you find at home.

    1. What has the problem of environment protection become so vital lately?
    2. What is meant by “environment”?
    3. Why does it need protection?
    4. What causes the pollution and contamination of the environment?
    5. Why has the health of people worsened?
    6. Why should we take care of our planet?

      It’s interesting to know

Most polluted city: Mexico has levels of poisonous gases more than double those deemed acceptance by the World Health Organization.

Lowest ozone levels: The world’s lowest ozone within the ozone loyer were recorded in October 1993 over the South Pole, Antarctica, which influenced badly on shielding the Earth from solar ultraviolet radiation.

Worst land pollution: From February to October  1994, thousands of tons of crude oil flowed across the Arctic tundra of the Komi Republic, Russia. An estimated 98,400 tons of oil leaked in a spillage that was 11,2 miles long.

Most acidic rain was recorded over the Great Lakes in the USA and Canada in 1982.

T: Now, please, work with environmental quotes which you prepare at home and comment them.

                                           ENVIRONMENTAL  QUOTES

    • “Mother planet is showing us the red warning light – ‘be careful’ – she is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house”. (The Dalai Lama)

    • “When the last tree is cut down and the last fish killed, the last river poisoned, then you will see that you can’t eat money”. (Greenpeace message)

    • “The people do not make the land, it is the land that makes the people”. (Proverb)

    • “The Nation that destroys its soil destroys itself”. (F. Roosevelt)

    • “Look after this planet, it’s the only one we have”. (Prince Philip of Britain)

    • “You could cover the whole world with asphalt, but sooner or later green grass would break through”. (Il.  Erenburg)

    5. Group work.

T: Divide into 4 groups. Your task is to put the words in the right order and make a short presentation of each problem.

    Group 1:

    1. important, ecologically, that, person, every, clean, it, world, is, very, should be, responsible, for.
    2. can, protect, to, what, be, done, them?
    3. 1986, nuclear, energy, disaster, showed, in, that, extremely, Chornobyl, dangerous.

    Group 2:

    1. necessary, learn, sources, of, energy, is, it, to, to, such as, etc., sun, wind, use, natural.
    2. world, we, in, a live, changeable.
    3. people, all, of, millions, over, fight, the world, pollution, against, for, everything, alive, earth, survival, on.

    Group 3:

    1. from, water, contaminate, wastes, the, plants, and, soil, factories, and.
    2. problem, cities, another, wastes, big, of, is.
    3. agricultural, very, are, harmful, man, often, products, of, a.

    Group 4:

    1. many, there, of, problems, are, environment, the.
    2. humanity, today, problem, the, greatest, for, pollution, is.
    3. power, also, are, thermal, plants, pollution, great, source, a, of.

    6. Speaking.

T: Imagine that you are at the World’s Conference devoted to environmental problems, make your reports.

P1: The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) was founded in 1961 by a small group of people who wanted to raise animals from extinction. Today, it’s a large international organization which has raised over 40 million pounds for conservation projects and given support to National Parks in 5 continents. It helps mammals and birds to survive.

People have always hunted valuable animals for their skins, their fur and also for meat. People themselves have destroyed wildlife. Different animals, birds and fish began to disappear one after another. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, by the year 2030, 25 per cent of all animals, birds, fish and insects may be extinct. For a long time we did not see the danger. Now many people understand that they have wasted their national riches, and try their best to protect Nature.

Our organization deals with the most urgent ecological problems of today’s world. It protests against nuclear weapon tests, sea and soil pollution, threats of greenhouse effect. It was founded in 1971, and now our international organization consists of over 4 mln members, and has its development departments in 23 countries.

P2: We are very much concerned about the changes in weather patterns. The droughts, mild winters, devastating hurricanes have become typical in those parts of the world where they were rare. All that happens due to the global warming-up process and its major reason – the greenhouse effect. As far as you know, it has become hotter because we are producing too many gases which hold heat. Trees and plants help to take gases such as carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but we have destroyed too many trees. And there are not enough plants to do this job. Nowadays, much is spoken about the decimation of the protective shield of ozone. It is really dangerous, and the cause of it can be easily explained. The ozone layer covers the Earth and protects us form the dangerous ultraviolet rays of the sun. but if ozone comes close to Earth in acid rains, for example, it’s also very dangerous and causes diseases. There appeared holes in the ozone layer because there are too many “greenhouse” gases.

P3: In our country the problems of protecting nature are also very actual. The trees are also being cut down at an alarming high rate. Any tree cut down is a loss for all of us. People can help by recycling. It’s a great way to reduce waste. Almost everything is being recycled today: aluminium cans, glass bottles, newspapers. Everybody knows that we shouldn’t use plastic bags, but bags made from organic cotton. Using paper again reduces our need for forest products. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling, paper recycling saves our country 200 mln trees per year. Besides, in 1974 was adopted the Control of Pollution Act, which provides control over wastes, noise, air and water pollution. Our people realize that we are a part of environment and everyone must take care of its protection.

P4: We think, that the most terrible accident is a radioactive contamination of a vast area in April 1986 when there was an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. The trouble is that the accident caused the contamination of not only a “30 kilometres zone” but it spread to many parts of Ukraine and some other countries. The explosion of the nuclear power station has done a great damage to the people’s health, especially children’s, forests and agriculture. In my opinion, the Chornobyl catastrophe is a tragedy for the whole nation.

P5: Literally, the world “ecology” means “a study of home”. Simply put, ecology means discovering what damage man has done and then finding ways to fix it. Neither is an easy task. Humans have been living on this planet for 2 mln years, and in the last 200 years humans have made a mess of it: polluted air, soil. Water; chopped and burns trees; killed animals; learnt to use nuclear power.

Today the word “ecology” is on everyone’s lips. It is the study of plants and animals in relation to their environment, so, if we want to help our planet to survive and keep it healthy for future generations we must be active participants in the protection and rebuilding of our environment, and also improving environmental education. It is clear that not only nature is influenced by the changes of the modern world, but people’s health as well. Smoking chimneys, burning forests are pumping tons of rubbish into the air, and we breathe it in. so, the air in large cities is very much polluted. People feel it without any tests. Doctors says that only 2-3 per cent of healthy babies are born now. And the people living in the places where there appeared holes in the ozone layer begin to view the sun as an enemy rather than a friend, because it can cause different diseases such as skin cancer and cataracts. The danger in those places is invisible but just as deadly.

    7. Reading

T: Read the text “Human beings and their environment”. Put each of the following words into the correct space in the text.

Biosphere, concern, demand, growth, environment, fuel, pollution, science

Environmental problems are our _____________ (8). Humans must take care of the environment so it will be a healthier place for all living things.

T: Complete these sentences with the correct part of speech derived from the words in brackets.

    1. What can we do to reduce the __________ of the atmosphere? (pollute).
    2. Many of the gases produced by factories are ________ to our health. (harm)
    3. Many countries try to control the growth of the ________. (populate)
    4. Protecting the environment is essential to our _______. (survive)
    5. While some countries get richer, the ___________ in other gets worse. (poor)

    8. Conclusion.

T: We have talked about different problems of the world today and at the end of our conference I suggest look at the questionnaire and learn which from us are environmentally friendly.

                       ARE YOU ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

It is personal action that will help preserve the world's environment. Actions, which are simple and quick. There are many actions each person can take every day. Try this test to know if you are environmentally aware.

Each positive answer gives you one point, each negative answer gives you a zero.

       You:

    1. Would rather walk or ride a bike than use means of transportation.
    2. Turn off light and other electrical equipment when not in use.
    3. Take shorter showers to save water.
    4. Write on both sides of paper to save trees.
    5. Put on more clothing in winter instead of turning up the electric heater.
    6. Buy products that are recycled, recyclable, reliable, refillable, repairable, reusable.
    7. Try to cook several meals at a time.
    8. Repair leaking taps.
    9. Use mugs or glasses instead of paper cups.
    10. Make sure the refrigerator door is fully closed.
    11. Use the clothes line rather than a dryer.
    12. Use energy efficient light bulbs.
    13. Do not pour oil, fat, milk, chemicals down the sink.
    14. Do not drop litter around.
    15. Look for opportunities to reduce trash.
    16. Reuse bags, containers, paper, boxes and other items.
    17. Select products with the least wasteful packaging.
    18. Buy, sell or donate used goods such as clothes, furniture or appliances.
    19. Encourage your friends to be environmentally friendly.

Count your score and analyse the results.

16 –19:   You definitely think globally and act locally. Good for you.

11 –15:   You are quite environmentally friendly but there are actions you can take to be more environmentally aware.

Less than 11: You could be characterized as a person who doesn't make an effective and possible contribution to the environmental protection. You forget that this is the world for you and your future children to live in. try not to be so indifferent to the world's environment. Learn how to preserve it.

T: Thank you very much for the great lesson I have had today with you. You have been working hard. So, let us make a conclusion of the lesson. Why we must protect nature and in what way we must do that?

How can we solve the environmental problems?
