Knowledge is power We say “knowlege is power”. Indeed , but for me knowledge of English is twice a power. Today English is very important as a school subject and the mean of communication in the world, as well. We can not imagine a modern person in Ukraine without knowledge of English. English is one of the most important languages in the modern world; more than one billion people can speak or understand this language. I think, nowadays it is very important to know foreign languages. Some people learn languages, because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third it`s just a hobby. People want to know languages, to write to their pen-friends or to communicate with people from different countries, to meet more people and make new friends. Also, they want to read books of famous writers in original, to read newspapers and magazines. It helps them to know more about different events, people`s life, customs and traditions. Learning foreign languages broadens our minds, people become educated. In my opinion, languages are especially important for those who work in different fields of science and technology, in politics. A foreign language helps to know the native language better. I began to study English in the second form and by now I have been learning this language for 8 and half years and I do not find it boring. Even now I can sing you “The ABC” song. In the last lesson of English we talked about Traditional British Meals. We entered the classroom, greeted our teacher and the lesson started. First we had a five minute conversation about different news in our lives and in the world. Everybody had to say some news. Then we read text about Traditional British Meals. We learned about different types of meal. As for me I did not know that breakfast is generally a bigger meal than they have on the Continent. We talked about national cuisine. Each cuisine has got its famous specialties. For example, Christmas Pudding for British cuisine means very much. Some English people could dispense with the turkey and goose, but a Christmas dinner in Britain without a traditional Christmas pudding would be strange indeed! All of us were surprised that the Christmas pudding is a direct descendant of the old time plum porridge, beloved by English people in the Middle Ages. We discussed cooking the British pudding and its ingredients. Our homework was to write own recipe of pudding. Then we answered the questions to this text. Everybody expressed own opinion about food. We read poems and excerpts about food from famous books in English. Some pupils of our class prepared a presentation on the topic “The difference between Ukrainian and British cuisines”. We liked this presentation. Next stage of the lesson was asking questions to our classmates. At the end of the lesson we learned proverbs and tongue-twisters in English. The most active pupils got their grades. We got satisfaction and knowledge at this lesson. Thanked to our teacher. Personally, I think that to know foreign languages today is absolutely necessary for every educated man, for every good specialist. So let`s to learn foreign languages and discover with them many interesting things in our life!
